Meet the team: Johanna Stiefler Johnson, senior content producer

We talk to Johanna about singing in a band, being a stickler for organisation – and believing that strong processes are one of Speak’s “greatest assets”.

Tell us about your role.

I am a senior content producer at Speak Media. In addition to working as editor of Parkinson’s Life, the weekly lifestyle magazine we produce for Parkinson’s Europe, I also help with managing different projects across the business.

What differentiates Speak from other content agencies?

One of our greatest assets at Speak is how process-driven we are. Having specific processes in place allows for a really high standard of content – and it means that both the team and clients know what to expect when it comes to the quality of our work.

Tell us about your career so far.

I went to university in Boston, US, majoring in Writing, Literature and Publishing with a minor in Environmental Studies. Whilst there, I gained useful experience editing for magazines and managing various organisations.

After graduating around the peak of the pandemic, I spent a while applying to jobs before moving to London with my partner, Sean. Then Speak Media hired me, which was wonderful!

What’s the main difference between your initial role and your current role?

When I started as a junior content producer, I spent most of my time drafting copy, as well as proofing, fact-checking and diving into idea research. As I advanced within the content team, I started taking on more editing and management responsibilities. Now, my role mainly involves a huge amount of editing and coordinating projects and deliverables.

What has been your favourite project to work on so far?

The Parkinson’s Life podcast, for which we were awarded ‘Best Branded Podcast’ at the 2021 International Content Marketing Awards. I’ve really enjoyed talking to people from all over the Parkinson’s community, and it makes me happy to know that we’ve had a positive impact for people who are facing challenges in this world.

What content trends are on your radar at the moment?

One trend that has caught my eye lately is narrated editorial content. I think it’s an intriguing medium for consuming content – and as an added benefit, it can help to increase accessibility.

What content problem bothers you?

I’m a stickler for the way things look. If I notice that articles are formatted inconsistently or have even tiny stylistic issues, it bugs me. Luckily, we’re diligent about looking out for this type of thing!

What motivates you to work hard?

I personally have high standards for my work, and I think that is encouraged by Speak’s culture. I work hard to meet my own standards and to make sure that I’m supporting the team as much as I can.

Tell us about your hobbies.

I love yoga and reading, both of which I do every day. I’m a singer in a band that covers the best 80s disco and 90s pop hits, and I also play guitar. Additionally, I really enjoy playing video games and board games. I also think it’s my calling in life to be an organiser – I just love making everything neat and tidy!

What would your ideal weekend be?

Weekends for me are about staying up late and sleeping in. I always make breakfast on Saturday, usually waffles or crêpes, and then I like to relax or go out and explore London. At night, my favourite activity is to go out to dinner and then go see a gig or a show on the West End.
